The Tulane Section of Neonatology provides clinical coverage at Tulane Lakeside Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Center. Our mission is to provide outstanding evidence-based neonatal clinical care, educate the next generation of pediatric and neonatal caregivers, and advance the science of neonatal care. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Tulane Lakeside Hospital for Women and Children is a26 bed level III S NICU in Metairie LA that provides care for newborns with complex health conditions, including surgical conditions, for the New Orleans metropolitan area. The NICU at Lakeview Regional Medical Center is an 11 bed level III NICU in Covington LA that provides care for newborns with complex congenital and acquired health conditions for the North Shore region. Tulane Neonatology contributes daily to undergraduate and graduate medical education through student and resident rotations. In addition, the group participates in continuing medical education routinely through presentations at local and national scientific meetings and educational workshops. The group also participates in staff training in the Lakeside and Lakeview Regional Medical Center NICUs.
The Neonatology group is invested in patient safety and clinical quality improvement education through mentoring of student and resident projects, design and delivery of resident safety and quality curriculum, and faculty development in patient safety and quality improvement methodologies. The Tulane Neonatology group benchmarks clinical outcomes of their patients through the Vermont Oxford Network (VON). The VON Database encompasses data from nearly 1,000 centers around the globe that voluntarily submit data about the care and outcomes of high-risk newborn infants.
