Child & Adolescent Psychiatry - Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Inspired by the horrific killings of George Floyd (May 25), Breonna Taylor (March 13), Ahmaud Arbery (February 23), and many others, we committed ourselves to a more focused effort to become an anti-racist section and to intensify our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts. This builds upon the work of the Departmental Diversity Committee and our tradition of beginning each year with four sessions on the Diversity Tenets of Mental Health. With the new commitment, we developed a process for working towards a Strategic Plan for DEI in Tulane Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. A steering committee has been formed, with Devi Miron Murphy serving as Chair, and faculty, staff and trainee representation. We also created four committees, Recruitment and Retention (faculty, trainees and staff), Self-Improvement, Clinical Training and Community Engagement. Action groups are being organized in community partnerships, consumerism, advocacy, community education, book club and film club.

Based on our University commitment, Tulane is awarded the 2022 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The annual HEED Award recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. Such a commitment is the hallmark of a great university, and is the kind of university Tulane aspires to become.
