Forensic Psychology Fellowship

Welcome to the Tulane School of Medicine, Forensic Neuropsychiatry Division! We are pleased to offer a one-year fellowship position in forensic psychological assessment.

The Tulane Fellowship in Forensic Psychology (TFIFP) is designed to provide psychology fellows with training and expertise in forensic evaluation and assessment. The goal of the fellowship is to provide applicants with the competencies needed for independent forensic practice and ultimately forensic board certification through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) (ABPP - Forensic Psychology).

Settings/Location

Fellows conduct evaluations under supervision in two forensic settings: a large inpatient state-operated forensic hospital (Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System/ELMHS) (Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System | Louisiana Department of Health) located in Jackson, Louisiana (about 2 hours from New Orleans) and an academically-based outpatient private practice (Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans). Fellows split their time between conducting inpatient assessments at ELMHS and performing outpatient evaluations in the community four (4) days per week. Community-based referrals are primarily for criminal evaluations, although civil evaluations are also conducted.

Outpatient evaluations occasionally require in-state travel to local jails and judicial districts, although forensic evaluations are also conducted remotely when possible. Travel that requires overnight accommodations is covered through Tulane’s partnership with several local hotels (Luxury Hotel Downtown New Orleans | The Jung Hotel & Residences and The St. Francisville Inn - Louisiana Hospitality Group).

Fellows are provided with a private office at ELMHS in Jackson and a Tulane-issued laptop for use during the training year.  Most fellows choose to live in the Baton Rouge area since it is located approximately 40 minutes from ELMHS. Baton Rouge is the home of several large universities and is a vibrant college town offering plenty of housing options and cultural and recreational events  (Visit Baton Rouge | Hotels, Restaurants, Events & Things To Do).

Landmark Case Seminar is held in person at ELMHS on Tuesdays at noon. Contemporary Case Law Pop-up Seminars are held virtually from noon to 1:00 pm along with General Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Observation of expert witness testimony throughout the year is also a part of the didactic experience. In addition, fellows serve as expert witnesses in Mock Trial held annually in November with psychiatry fellows, the forensic Psychology intern, and third-year law students from Tulane University. The development of new research projects or projects using archival data sets is encouraged.
