Is it possible to work with a mentor outside of Tulane University School of Medicine?

  -No, your primary mentor must be faculty within Tulane University.  

 

Are there research areas that are preferred for the DeBakey program?

  -No, there are no preferred areas. All areas of research are appropriate and encouraged. Having a mentor that has an active research program is most important.

 

What happens if I decide I do not have the time to do research?

  -That is fine. Your most important priority is passing your classes and becoming a top-notch physician. The critical thing is to make sure you communicate with your mentor and the program that you are no longer able to take part. There is no penalty for quitting.

 

Am I required to stick to the exact project I proposed in my application?

  -No, research plans constantly change as you gather data. The direction of the project and the research goals can be redefined based on discussions between you and your mentor. However, when changes are made please contact the program.

 

Should I have a specific research project in mind before finding a mentor?

  -Yes, it's best to determine your research interests before seeking a mentor. Once you've identified your interests, you can find a mentor whose past work and current projects alight with your your goals. Your mentor can then guide you in developing a specific research project.
