Respirator Fit Testing

Check your schedule for the date and time of your testing.

**PLEASE READ**

***VERY IMPORTANT***

Since saccharin aerosol is used during the fit testing, food or drinks with artificial sweeteners should NOT be consumed within 15 minutes prior to the scheduled test.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Respiratory Protection Standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, requires that males are clean shaven prior to fit testing. Research has proven that facial hair is one of the factors that contributes to improper fit of a respirator and interferes with the actual seal of the respirator to one’s face. In order to be fit tested, males are allowed to have a mustache but not a beard, goatee, or long sideburns. In accordance with the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard, individuals with facial hairs that interfere with the respirator seal CAN NOT be fit tested. For facial hair guidelines, click here

Each student required to wear a respirator must obtain a medical clearance prior to wearing it. Each individual can obtain clearance by completing the N95 Medical Evaluation Questionnaire and have it signed by a physician or licensed health care professional (PLHCP). You can get this done by a personal physician, or you can have it signed by a Tulane-licensed professional the day of testing.
