The Tulane Pediatric Residency program firmly believes that diversity, equity, and inclusion strengthen our grit and resilience, improves education, provides tremendous opportunities for community engagement, and creates well-trained pediatricians.
We are a work in progress. Tulane doctors have been caring for the people of New Orleans and the surrounding areas since 1834. Our complex history is filled with examples when we have proudly served our community, and painful examples when we have fallen short. We recommit to developing and growing a workforce that reflects the rich diversity of race, gender, religious belief, national origin, ethnicity, age, ability, and sexual orientation found in the unique community and culture of New Orleans. We dedicate ourselves to recognizing systemic biases and advocating for change.
As a program, we will invest our efforts into recruiting, supporting, and training a diverse physician workforce that includes members from groups that have been historically marginalized and underrepresented in medicine. In doing so, we understand the importance of providing a learning environment intolerant of discrimination in all its forms. It is our goal that all residents feel supported and mentored and are provided with equal access to opportunities for professional growth and advancement. We believe a diverse group of pediatricians better serves the children living in our diverse community.
Our patients come from all over Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, with a deep and diverse range of pathology and representing remarkably different cultural contexts. By accident of geography, culture and climate, we see things here that you might not see anywhere else, in addition to the bread-and-butter diagnoses that comprise a pediatrician's typical daily work.
Our faculty members work in every pediatric subspecialty, and are nationally renowned in their fields of practice. Our subspecialists provide innovative care and discover new treatment strategies through research. Without a significant number of fellows, our residents work directly with these leaders. In addition to the traditional subspecialties, our general pediatricians will show you how to work with kids diagnosed with chronic medical conditions. Meghan Howell runs our NICU-graduate clinic and Mary Rossi treats the growing number of children with obesity and diabetes. Kim Mukerjee leads a team working with refugee children. Our residents work with excellent faculty that are role model pediatricians.
Lastly, but importantly, the people you train beside make a difference. Our team is composed of residents from many different backgrounds, who are animated by the same values. Your standardized test scores do not predict the quality of pediatrician that you will become. Instead, we are looking to fill our residency with physicians driven to improve the wellbeing of children. Whether driven by community advocacy, research, or innovative clinical care, we enjoy working with motivated physicians that are passionate about pediatrics. Our residents learn from one another, support one another, and inspire one another as well.
