Tulane Doctors - Maternal Fetal Medicine

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians, also called perinatologists, are obstetricians who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their unborn babies, who may be at high risk for special health problems.

Women are generally referred to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist by their obstetrician or by an infertility specialist because of the potential of a pregnancy-related health concern or because a problem develops during the course of the pregnancy. Some women choose to see a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist on their own, without a referral from their obstetrician.Read More

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist works together with the woman's obstetrician to develop a plan of care tailored to her personal healthcare needs. Though a woman may see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist several times throughout her pregnancy, in most cases, her own obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and will deliver the baby. Certain very high risk mothers may be cared for entirely by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist. Some example of services provided by Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians:

  • Targeted or level 2 ultrasound
  • Prenatal diagnositic testing such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis
  • Prenatal screening including first trimester screening, fetal nuchal translucency, and nasal bone assessment
  • Genetic Counseling
  • Diabetes education and management
  • Hypertension management
  • The care of multiple gestations (twins, triplets, higher order multiples)
  • The care of genetic disorders in pregnancy (mothers with PKU, or other genetic disorders)
  • The care of the fetus with a malformation
