Volunteer Positions at the Tulane Drop-In Center (DIC)

Greeter/ Data Entry Support

Job Description: Greet and sign in DIC guests, determine eligibility using drivers’ licenses or identity cards, and make sure clients sign up for chores. Set up new clients with intake packets. Explain DIC procedures as needed. Scan intake information into EHS systems.

Skills Necessary: Basic computer skills. Good interpersonal and communication skills and focus on good customer service. Comfortable in a busy environment. Must be able to stand for several hours.

Clothing Bank Specialist

Job Description: Manage, wash and sort donated usable clothing items within the center. Aid in special clothing drives (i.e. Winter Warmers drive).

Skills Necessary: Ability to work on your feet for several hours in a busy environment. Good customer service skills and the ability to work in a team are required.

Community Outreach

Job Description: Participate in street outreach and community events (including HIV testing events) targeted at providing supportive services to homeless and marginally housed adolescents. Some Saturday events. Also assist with pick-up of in-kind donations and food items.

Skills Necessary: Must be comfortable engaging members of the community in mixed income areas. Must be able to stand and walk around for several hours.

One on One Mentoring/Tutoring

Job Description: Many of our clients are pursuing a HiSet degree (formerly known as G.E.D. General Equivalency diploma) or college and would benefit from a one-on-one tutor.

Skills Necessary: Volunteers must be willing to commit to meet with their client for at least 3 months. Patience and a helpful demeanor a must. General knowledge of math, grammar, science etc. preferred.

Volunteer Chefs

Job Description: This is an opportunity to get your friends and family involved! At the center we provide daily meals and we could use help in providing breakfast and/or lunch for 15-25 people. Volunteers would be responsible for the purchase, prep and delivery of food. Holidays are especially helpful!

Requirements: We do not have an oven at the center so we need meals that can be easily reheated in the microwaves. Must make enough food to feed 15-25 youth for that day. Please try and provide a nutritionally balanced meal that includes a protein, starch and vegetable if possible.
