Welcome to the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
Medicine advances when scientific discovery and compassionate patient care work together. Our mission is to train the next generation of physician-scientists who will bridge these worlds—asking important clinical questions, pursuing innovative research, and translating discoveries into meaningful improvements in human health.
The establishment of Tulane's NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program marks an exciting milestone for our institution. Building on the success of our Physician Scientist Program, this investment allows us to expand opportunities for talented students who are passionate about both medicine and research. Through rigorous clinical training, immersive laboratory and computational research, dedicated mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration, our students develop the skills needed to become leaders in academic medicine and biomedical science.
One of our greatest strengths is the breadth of research opportunities available across Tulane University. Students work alongside internationally recognized faculty from the School of Medicine, the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and the School of Science and Engineering, tackling some of today's most pressing health challenges, including infectious diseases, immunology, cardiovascular and kidney disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and many others.
We are equally committed to building a diverse and inclusive physician-scientist workforce. While we recruit exceptional students from across the country, we are especially proud to strengthen pathways for students from Louisiana and the Gulf South through partnerships with local institutions and meaningful research experiences that foster long-term success.
Our graduates will not only advance scientific knowledge but also improve the lives of patients and communities through discovery, innovation, and compassionate care. We invite you to explore our program and learn how Tulane can help you become part of the next generation of physician-scientists dedicated to transforming the future of medicine.
We look forward to welcoming you to our community.
