
The Program
The DeBakey Scholars program is a longitudinal program that facilitates research and training for medical students. Student’s that complete the program will graduate with a Distinction in Research.
Learning Objectives
Each student in the program will:
- Develop a research plan (with the direction of a mentor) with a testable hypothesis and the aims and approach to test it
- Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the literature pertaining to their topic
- Demonstrate the ability to gather, organize and protect biomedical information
- Demonstrate proficiency in laboratory or data processing skills geared towards generating original scientific results
- Develop scientific writing and presentation skills
Expectations
- Work with a mentor to design and conduct research
- Complete yearly progress reports regarding their research
- Write an abstract and present their work at TRICS and/or other national meeting
- Publish their work as first author in an accredited journal
