Applying to Tulane IM

Our Requirements

1. Applicants must be graduates from an AAMC-accredited or AOA-accredited medical school.

2. Applicants must pass USMLE Step 1 by the time of your application; Applicants must pass USMLE Step 2 by the time the rank list is due for programs. There is no minimum board score for admission. We do not believe that a test score reflects the quality of a physician.

3. Applicants must complete the standard application in the ERAS and registration in the NRMP match.

4. Three letters of recommendation are required, one being the Department of Medicine Chair's letter and one being the clinical letter of recommendation.

For International Medical Graduates, we accept J1 visas that are sponsored through ECFMG. We prefer one year of U.S. clinical experience and recommend the graduation year be within five years of applying. We are unable to offer observerships and externships at this time.

Through your application, we hope to learn more about your medical education journey, including meaningful information about work, volunteer, and research experiences. These experiences along with the personal statement will help us better identify applicants who fit our program environment and mission.

Application Review

Currently, we have a holistic approach to reviewing applications. We do not extend interviews based on any one criterion alone. We consider all aspects of your application, including personal statement, extracurricular experiences, scholarship, and letters of recommendation.

The Interview

Interviews are by invitation only, and once accepted, you can choose your interview date. We have rolling acceptance for interviews, which means we extend interviews throughout the interview season.

1. Prior to interview day: All interviews occur on Fridays. We host all interviews on Zoom. Before the interview, you will be provided with a link to the collective interview Zoom meeting.

2. Program director welcome: To highlight the personal touch provided by the program, Dr. Bhatnagar will reach out prior to the interview for a brief five-minute phone conversation.

3. Interview day: Dr. Bhatnagar will speak with you about her experience in New Orleans and give you a run down on the basics of the program during the first hour. From there, there will be several breakout sessions including two twenty-minute interviews, at least one of which will be with a current resident.
