Tutor Guidelines

Tulane University School of Medicine (SOM) is committed to providing a high quality-learning environment for all students.  The Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Program was created in 2003 through the collaborative efforts of the Office of Medical Education and the Owl Club.  Through this program, free tutoring services are available to students who need academic support. Tutoring services include advice, guidance, and review of course content to assure that students are academically successful and develop the skills required to become independent, lifelong learners.

Job Description and Duties

The role of the tutor is to act as a learning catalyst, positive role model, and coach. The tutor serves as a facilitator of the learning process, filling content gaps as needed, assessing/modifying the tutee’s reasoning and problem solving skills, and encouraging effective learning strategies. When working with tutees, tutors are encouraged to stimulate critical thinking, foster an understanding of the "big picture," and assist students in becoming active participants in the learning process.  Additionally, tutors should work with tutees to practice integration and application of knowledge.

All tutors must meet the following academic and professional standards:

  • Be recommended by course directors based on their academic performance
  • Possess good communication skills
  • Be dependable and punctual
  • Maintain confidentiality
