Tulane Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers a one-year ACGME accredited and ABMS sponsored fellowship program in Addiction Medicine. The program provides well-rounded educational and clinical training in the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of individuals with the disease of addiction, substance use related health conditions, and those who are exhibiting an unhealthy use of substances. Training will impart skills to recognize and treat pathological use of nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications and other legal drugs, and addictive use of illicit drugs. Training will include skills to recognize and provide treatment for other manifestations of addiction such as gambling disorder, compulsive overeating, and sexual addiction.
The goal of the program is to train the next generation of leaders to advance evidence-based clinical care and academic understanding of addiction by striving for continuous enrichment of the training experience. The program will prepare trainees for clinical and academic leadership in Addiction Medicine and for the certification examination offered by the American Board of Preventative Medicine.
The fellowship program is designed to provide a 12-month intensive academic and clinical experience for applicants who are board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, or Psychiatry. Following completion of training each fellow will be able to:
- Provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health and provide care for common psychiatric problems associated with addiction and substance use disorders.
- Apply knowledge in the biomedical, clinical, epidemiological sciences and social-behavioral sciences to their care of substance use disorder patients.
- Pursue a career focused on clinical care, research and/or teaching, and health care leadership as a scholarly practitioner.
During the 12 months of training the fellow’s clinical work is grounded in their experiences at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare system, East Jefferson General Hospital and Clinics, Longbranch Healthcare, Addiction Counseling, Education, and Recovery, Behavioral Health Group, Hancock County Family Treatment Court, Upward Health and other regional addiction treatment facilities associated with Tulane Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
Training will include introductory orientation, clinical supervision, weekly evidence-based didactics, and monthly journal club. The fellow will participate in Psychiatry Grand Rounds, attend select Psychiatry didactics and American College of Academic Addiction Medicine didactics. Fellows will be given teaching opportunities involving a variety of audiences and develop leadership experience on clinical teams.
Inpatient training will focus on consult service, detox and treatment of comorbid medical and psychiatric diseases that accompany substance use disorders exposing the fellow to an extensive evidence-based armamentarium. Residential training will focus on supporting behavioral and cognitive change in a multidisciplinary setting. Outpatient training will expose fellows to a range of modalities from intensive treatment is a multidisciplinary setting to virtual and in-person continuity provision of addiction care.
