The Program

The DeBakey Scholars program is a longitudinal program that facilitates research and training for medical students. Student’s that complete the program will graduate with a Distinction in Research.

Learning Objectives

Each student in the program will:

  1. Develop a research plan (with the direction of a mentor) with a testable hypothesis and the aims and approach to test it
  2.  Demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate the literature pertaining to their topic
  3. Demonstrate the ability to gather, organize and protect biomedical information
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in laboratory or data processing skills geared towards generating original scientific results
  5.  Develop scientific writing and presentation skills

Expectations

  1.       Work with a mentor to design and conduct research
  2.       Complete yearly progress reports regarding their research
  3.       Write an abstract and present their work at TRICS and/or other national meeting
  4.       Publish their work as first author in an accredited journal
