Welcome to the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine is in a period of significant growth, expanding both its clinical reach and the complexity of care available across the Greater New Orleans region.

Led by Jamil Borgi, MD, the division offers a broad range of adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, including complex valve and aortic procedures, coronary revascularization, minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, mechanical circulatory support, and heart transplantation. Its growing presence at East Jefferson General Hospital and across LCMC Health is helping strengthen regional access to advanced cardiothoracic care.

Innovation is a defining part of the division’s work. Faculty are advancing minimally invasive and robotic approaches while helping build programs in cardiogenic shock, durable ventricular assist device support, advanced heart failure, and transplantation. That combination of established expertise and ongoing program development creates a dynamic academic environment for both trainees and faculty.

Medical students and residents are exposed to the full spectrum of cardiothoracic care, from operative technique and perioperative management to complex decision-making for critically ill patients. They also gain a firsthand view of how new programs are built, refined, and integrated across a health system.

For prospective faculty, the division offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing academic enterprise with room for clinical leadership, innovation and program development. For trainees, it provides exposure to a specialty that continues to evolve rapidly through new technologies, new approaches and increasingly complex care.
