TeamSTEPPS Courses

TeamSTEPPS Essentials® (Request a quote)
Objective: This two-hour course introduces participants to team and communications concepts from TeamSTEPPS and gives learners the essential information needed to interact with other TeamSTEPPS healthcare professionals.
Learners: Both clinical and non-clinical. Groups up to 100, even at your site.

TeamSTEPPS Fundamentals® (Request a quote)
Objective: This four-hour course is aimed at anyone with patient care responsibilities. It goes more in-depth than the Essentials course and puts TeamSTEPPS tools and concepts into action to increase patient safety. A Fundamentals course gets your team ready to start utilzing TeamSTEPPS on a daily basis when caring for patients. 
Learners: Clinical with patient care roles. Groups up to 100, even at your site.

TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer® (Request a quote)
Objective: This 1.5 day course includes the Fundamentals course on Day 1 and goes an extra step to train some of your team members to be your own in-house TeamSTEPPS trainers. This train the trainer course will get your front line staff, supervisors, QI, and education staff ready to carry on your TeamSTEPPS initiative and take the mantel to train new team members and coach current ones to excellence.
Learners: Both clinical and non-clinical. Groups up to 100, even at your site.

Fundamentals of Laparascopic Surgery Testing (Register at SAGES)
Objective: Complete your FLS cognitive and / or hands-on assessment test at the Tulane Sim Center.
Learners: Surgery.

 

Rapid Response Team Training (Request a quote)
Objective: The primary objective of this course is to provide learners with the necessary communication and teamwork skills to effectively and efficiently manage a crisis situation.  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to define what is meant by a patient crisis; describe the process by which problems are identified and then evolve into an adverse outcome during medical care; utilize dynamic decision-making as it applies to crisis management; define metacognition and relate this concept to successful crisis management behaviors; analyze the rapid response team characteristics and skills: medical knowledge/application, planning, communication, resource management, and judgment; analyze and critique video recorded performances of self and peers in terms of role responsibilities; identify the roles in a Rapid Response Team; and manage the responsibilities associated with each role in a team setting.
Learners: Any clinical teams, designed for minimum of 6 team members

Tulane School of Medicine courses (Internal only)

Fundamentals of Anesthesiology
Objective: This four-week course consists of individual task training and perioperative emergency management.   Learners will be introduced to and practice the following procedural skills: endotracheal intubation, LMA placement, bag-valve mask ventilation, emergency cricothyrotomy, flexible fiberoptic intubation, peripheral and central venous cannulation, arterial cannulation, peripheral nerve blockade, epidural and spinal needle placement, basic suturing, and needle decompression of the chest.  Learners will also practice the following perioperative emergencies using the CAE HPS: cannot intubate/cannot ventilate, massive hemorrhage, malignant hyperthermia, anaphylaxis, machine failure, and V-fib and V-tach arrest.
Learners: Medical students on their anesthesiology clerkship rotation and anesthesiology residents.

 

Cardiac Training
Objective: This course introduces learners to realistic cardiac sounds.
Learners: Any, but typically first and second year medical students during basic sciences.

 

Invasive Cardiology 
Objective: This course allows learners to practice a variety of angioplasty cases on the 3D Systems Angio Mentor in a simulated environment to compliment their training in the hospital setting.  The course increases learner’s acclimation and confidence to perform angiograms and angioplasty.
Learners: Cardiology fellows

 

Emergency Medicine Core Procedures
Objective: By the end of the course, learners will be familiar with several procedures typically experienced during an emergency medicine rotation.
Learners: Medical Students on Emergency Medicine rotation or EM Interns

 

Intubation Clinic 
Objective: By the end of the course, learners will be familiar with the procedure of oral and nasal intubation. They will know the indications, contraindications and alternatives to intubation. Learners will practice various intubation procedures on adult and pediatrics task trainers.
Learners: Medical Students

 

Introduction to Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 
Objective: This course exposes learners to the basic techniques and interventions of endoscopy prior to practice on actual patients.  At the completion of this course, learners will be familiar with the basic maneuvers of both upper and lower endoscopy and the basic techniques of interventional endoscopy.
Learners: residents and fellows

 

Introduction to Internal Medicine Procedures
Objective:  This course introduces learners to the following procedures: paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, central line placement (residents only) and intubation.  Learners are then able to practice on their own at the Simulation Center.
Learners: Medical students on their internal medicine clerkship rotation or internal medicine residents.

 

ACLS Scenarios for Medicine Interns
Objective: The major goal of this curriculum is to give new Medicine interns practice time and experience running through ACLS protocols utilizing the SimMan manikin and pre-programmed ACLS scenarios.
Learners: Interns

 

Neurology Core Clerkship
Objective: This course introduces learners to the following procedures with focus on issues found in neurology - eye exams and lumbar puncture.
Learners: Medical students on their Neurology clerkship rotation.

 

Introduction to Intrapartum Care and Normal Delivery
Objective: This course uses a clinical case to describe normal intrapartum events, including the mechanics and process involved in vaginal delivery of a term infant.  The scenario is used as a jumping off point to discuss the various aspects of labor and delivery.  Students will perform a normal vaginal delivery on the NOELLE Birthing Simulator.
Learners: Medical students on their OB/GYN clerkship rotation.

 

OB/GYN Internship Preparation
Objective:  This course exposes learners to the basic surgical skills required of an intern in Obstetrics & Gynecology.  Learners will be introduced to and perform a cervical exam, normal vaginal delivery, obstetrics emergency drills and perineal laceration repair.
Learners: Medical students preparing for an internship in OB/GYN or new OB/GYN interns.

 

Clinical Competency in Pediatric Critical Care
Objective: Knowledge will be assessed and reinforced using a case-based problem solving approach in the evaluation & stabilization of organ systems dysfunction in the critically ill child. The main goal is to enable students to process clinical information in order to properly manage the critically ill child.  In addition, this course will train students to defend clinical judgment and evaluate patient outcomes based on objective clinical data.  At the completion of course students will be able to 1) evaluate a child with respiratory failure and initiate needed therapy; 2) evaluate a child with cardiovascular instability, including shock and initiate therapy; 3) identify patient at risk for intracranial hypertension and initiate appropriate care; and 4) perform basic and advanced pediatric resuscitation.
Learners: 4th year medical students, sub-interns & interns

 

Neonatal Resuscitation Program 
Objective: This course allows learners to demonstrate their knowledge of the NRP protocol and algorithms.  It is designed as a ‘refresher’ and assumes that learners have previous knowledge of neonatal resuscitation protocol and algorithms. Topics covered include bag/mask positive pressure ventilation, endotracheal intubation and responding to a Megacode.

An Overview of Procedural Sedation in Children 
Objective: The overall goal of this course is to improve patient care and safety during procedural sedation by increasing provider competency and skills. The curriculum includes focused case-based lectures and simulation sedation related airway emergencies. At completion, participants should be able to 1) select sedatives/analgesics more appropriately and develop a safe sedation plan; 2) show improved competency in recognition of treatment of adverse drug events; and 3) develop an action plan to rescue patients from airway emergencies.
Learners: pediatric intensivists, pediatric ER physicians, pediatric hospitalists, advanced practice nurses

 

Pediatric Critical Care
Objective: The overall goal of this course is to improve patient care and safety delivered by pediatric critical care residents. The course includes case-based simulation.
Learners: Residents in Pediatric Critical Care

 

Basic Colonoscopy
Objective: All training is proficiency-based training. For case 1, the learner will complete the case in less than 10 minutes with 95% of the surface area examined, 1% or less of the time patient in pain, no events of loss of lumen, and no episodes of local pressure. For case 2 the learner will complete the case in less than 15 minutes with 95% of the surface area examined, 1% or less of the time patient in pain, 1 or less events of loss of lumen, and 1 or less episodes of local pressure. For case 3 the learner will complete the case in less than 20 minutes with 95% of the surface area examined, 1% or less of the time patient in pain, 2 or less events of loss of lumen, and 2 or less episodes of local pressure.

Basic Surgical Procedures
Objective: This course is designed to give learners an understanding of the diversity of procedures performed by general surgeons, to develop proficiency in basic procedural skills and to increase learners’ comfort level before they perform these procedures on patients.  The curriculum is divided into three components.  The first component is training all participants in suturing and knot tying.  The second component consists of training in insertion of urinary catheters, insertion of nasogastric tubes, insertion of central lines and training in proper technique to prep and drape a surgical patient.  The third component includes TEAM trauma training, laparoscopic skills training and endoscopic skills training.
Learners: Medical students on their general surgery clerkship rotation.

 

Fundamentals of Laparascopic Surgery Practice
Objective: Designed to give residents hands-on practice time on FLS training towers prior to taking the FLS hands-on assessment.
Learners: Surgery, PGY3-PGY5.

 

Honors Surgery
Objective: The course is specifically for medical students about to start their 4th year and who are accepted into Honors Surgery. During this several week rotation, learners will spend 30 hours at the Sim Center receiving advanced training on several surgical procedures.

Certification Courses

 

Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification  (Sessions planned to start back up June 2020)
Objective: This course allows learners to demonstrate their knowledge of the NRP protocol and algorithms.  It is designed as a ‘refresher’ and assumes that learners have previous knowledge of neonatal resuscitation protocol and algorithms. Topics covered include bag/mask positive pressure ventilation, endotracheal intubation and responding to a Megacode.
Learners: OB-GYN, Pediatrics

 

American Heart Association CPR courses
Objective: ACLS, BLS, and PALS are required life support and CPR courses for healthcare professionals. Depending on your patient care role, you may need one or multiple of these certifications. Courses offered through both classroom versions or HeartCode versions which present most course work online with an in-person skills check at the end.

American College of Surgeons ATLS Provider or Refresher
Objective: Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is a required life support for healthcare professionals working in trauma surgery or emergency departments. The Provider course is 2 full days concluding with a written assessment and scenario based assessment and the Refresher course is 1 day, concluding with both assessments. Tulane runs ATLS courses monthly taught by expert faculty members from Tulane and LSU Departments of Surgery and Emergency Medicine and subject matter experts from the region.
