Overview
To support a more consistent, accessible, and high-quality web presence, Tulane School of Medicine has implemented a new Content Moderation process in Drupal.
This workflow introduces a structured review and approval step for all website updates before they are published. The goal is to ensure that every piece of content meets institutional standards for accuracy, accessibility, functionality, and brand consistency.
Why Content Moderation Matters
As our websites continue to expand, maintaining quality across hundreds of pages requires a more intentional process. Content Moderation helps us:
Improve Accessibility
All content is reviewed to ensure it meets accessibility standards, making our websites usable for all audiences.
Maintain Website Hygiene
Regular oversight helps prevent outdated information, broken links, formatting issues, and inconsistencies from going live.
Ensure Brand Consistency
Content is aligned with Tulane’s voice, tone, and visual standards, creating a cohesive experience across all pages.
Reduce Errors and Bugs
A second layer of review helps catch technical issues, layout problems, and unintended changes before publication.
Streamline Long-Term Maintenance
A centralized process makes it easier to manage updates, track changes, and maintain quality over time.
How the Content Moderation Process Works
The new workflow introduces a simple, structured path for all content updates:
- Draft- Content editors create or update content as usual, but changes are saved as a draft instead of being published immediately.
- Submit for Review- Once edits are complete, the content is submitted for moderation.
Review & Approval- An administrator reviews the submission for accuracy, accessibility, design consistency, and functionality.
Publish- Approved content is published to the live site.
If revisions are needed, feedback will be provided and the content will be returned for updates before approval.
What This Means for Content Editors
- You will no longer publish content directly to the live site.
- All updates must be submitted for review before going live.
- Turnaround time for approvals is typically within one business day.
- You may receive feedback or requested edits before publication.
This process ensures that your work is supported, reviewed, and aligned with best practices—without requiring you to manage every technical or compliance detail on your own.
Best Practices for Submitting Content
To help ensure a smooth and timely approval process:
- Double-check spelling, grammar, and formatting
- Ensure links are working and accurate
- Use proper heading structure (H2, H3, etc.)
- Include alt text for images
- Avoid inline styling or custom formatting
- Follow Tulane branding and tone guidelines
- Follow accessibility guidelines
Submitting clean, complete content helps speed up the review process.
Our Shared Goal
Content Moderation is not about adding barriers—it’s about improving the overall quality and reliability of our websites.
By working within this process, we can:
- Deliver a better user experience
- Maintain compliance with accessibility standards
- Present a unified and professional brand
- Ensure long-term sustainability of our web content
