Applications for the residency program are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS).
Application Information
The following materials are required for a completed application to Tulane Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program:
- Application through ERAS
- Dean's Letter
- Three letters of recommendation from faculty
- Official Medical School Transcript.
International Medical Graduates
- Foreign applications MUST be ECFMG certified.
- We sponsor J1 VISA only, no exceptions.
- We prefer one year of US clinical experience.
- Observerships and externships are not available.
All applications must be received through ERAS by November 15th.
This year we will be offering a new, flexible interview format to better accommodate applicant preferences and time zones. Applicants will be invited to schedule the following interview components independently:
- One large group program overview with Program Director and residents (90 minutes)
- One resident social (60 minutes)
- Three individual faculty interviews (15 minutes each)
- Program director interview
- 2 core faculty interviews

FAQs
What are your USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK minimum score requirements? Any maximum number of attempts required?
We don’t use minimum score thresholds. All applicants who have passed USMLE and/or COMLEX Step 1 are welcome to apply.
To be granted an interview, do you require both exams Step 1 and Step 2 CK?
We require that applicants have passed either USMLE or COMPLEX Step 1 prior to being offered an interview.
At the time of application, do you require the ECFMG Certificate?
Applicants do not need to be ECFMG certified prior to applying.
When is your application deadline?
We encourage applicants to apply before ERAS opens to programs, however, we may continue to review applications submitted after ERAS opens if we have interview slots open up.
Do you require US Clinical experience? If so, how long?
US clinical experience is recommended but not required.
Do you accept the J1 visa or sponsor H1?
We accept J1 visas.
Do you have a cutoff since graduation?
We do not use a graduation cutoff.
What is the total number of IMGS you currently have in the program?
Currently 10 of our 23 residents graduated from international medical schools.
Will you be hosting this year’s interview online, in person or both?
All interviews in 2026-27 will be virtual.
Do you have any unique Letter of Recommendation requirements?
We do not have specific requirements for letters of recommendation, but we find the most useful recommendations come from attending physicians that know you well and can speak directly about your knowledge, skills, attitudes, and interests.
When will you begin sending interview invites?
We want to give your (and every) application a thorough review before we select our first round of interview invites! Our first round of invites will go out around 3 pm CST on October 6th, followed by a second round on October 13th and a third round on October 20th. We may send out additional invitations in November, depending on availability of interview slots. All applicants will be notified of the program's intention to interview, waitlist, or not invite them by November 23rd.
Do you accept DO applicants?
Yes! Currently 1 of our 23 residents graduated from an osteopathic medical school.
What are you looking for in applicants?
We are looking for adaptable, proactive, engaged, and open-minded applicants that are up for the challenges inherent in working in an under-resourced system. We review all applications received and score them on a number of factors, including academics, language skills, honor society membership, connections to our city and region, mission alignment.
How do you decide who to interview?
We welcome all interested applicants, regardless of background! We will prioritize interview invitations for candidates we feel are most likely to thrive in our program. We will review applicants in the following order:
- Applicants that have signaled our program
- Applicants that are from or who have trained in Louisiana
- Applicants that have signaled our geographic region
- Applicants that are from or who have trained in neighboring states
- Applicants that have been inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society
- Applicants that speak Spanish and/or Vietnamese
- Applicants from backgrounds representative of our patient population in New Orleans
- All remaining applicants
What should I expect in my faculty interviews?
Our goal is to identify applicants that will thrive in our program and city and provide community-engaged, evidence-based, person-centered care to the people of New Orleans. We used structured interviews with behavioral questions to assess the competencies we feel are most important for residents that thrive in our program. Our interviews are short (just 15 minutes each). We will offer optional post-interview Q&A sessions, which are a great opportunity to get your questions answered if you don’t have time during interviews; invited applicants can attend as many Q&A sessions as they’d like.
How will I be scored as an applicant?
We use a holistic evaluation rubric that considers multiple aspects of your application, including your competency-based interview scores, academic history, language skills, honor society memberships, connections to our city and region, mission alignment, and participation in resident social events. Faculty play the primary role in this evaluation and ranking process, while residents also have a small but meaningful opportunity to provide input.
