Cholangitis is the medical term for bile duct inflammation.

Causes

  • Bacterial Infection
  • Gallstones
  • Sclerosing Cholangitis
  • Narrowing of the common bile duct
Symptoms
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Dark urine
  • Clay-colored stools
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
Diagnosis
  • Blood tests
  • Liver function tests
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
  • Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiogram (PTCA)
Treatment
  • Antibiotics
  • Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Surgery
