Tulane Fulbright Scholar Advances Global Health Through Pneumonia Research

Fulbright Scholar Ferris Munyonho, a native of Zimbabwe, chose Tulane University for its bold, inclusive culture and strong commitment to making a difference. Now graduating with his PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Munyonho conducted groundbreaking research under Dr. Jay Kolls, developing a precision-cut lung slice (PCLS) model that allows long-term study of Pneumocystis pneumonia—a life-threatening fungal infection common in immunocompromised patients. His work is especially impactful for low-resource settings like his home country, where the model enables affordable drug screening and research. With a passion for global health, Munyonho hopes to use his training to mentor the next generation of scientists and bridge the gap between science and policy to drive change where it’s needed most.
