Tulane Medical Student Awarded Army Achievement Medal

Griffith Parry, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and second-year medical student at Tulane University School of Medicine, was recently honored with an Army Achievement Medal for his outstanding contributions to scientific research. The award was presented by L. Lee Hamm, MD, Sr. Vice President and Dean, in a special ceremony recognizing Perry’s commitment to military service and scientific advancement.

Parry, who studied organic chemistry at the United States Military Academy at West Point before pursuing his medical degree, has been conducting research on propellant additives for the past seven years.

A third-generation military medical student at Tulane, Peary is following in the footsteps of his uncle, who graduated from Tulane School of Medicine in 1977, and his cousin, a 2008 graduate—both of whom served in the Air Force. For Parry, the choice was clear.

“When it came time to apply to medical school, it was Tulane and Tulane only,” he said.

With two more years of medical school ahead, followed by a military residency, Parry says he’s excited about the future.

“I’ve always been drawn to the science of medicine, particularly the patient care elements, and I’ve always seen myself as a military physician,” he said. “After residency, I plan to serve at least four years and perhaps make a career out of it.”
