Tulane Pulmonary Faculty Advance Innovative Treatment at UMC
Tulane University School of Medicine’s Pulmonary team is helping lead the way in advanced, minimally invasive care with the successful launch of endobronchial valve placement at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMC). The first procedure was completed early April 2026, marking an important milestone in expanding treatment options for patients with complex lung conditions.
Endobronchial valve placement offers a new approach for individuals suffering from persistent air leaks and severe emphysema—conditions that can lead to prolonged hospital stays and increased health risks. For patients who are not candidates for surgery, this technique provides a critical alternative. By using small, one-way valves placed in the airways, physicians can reduce lung hyperinflation, helping patients breathe more easily and improving overall quality of life.
“Endobronchial valves: small devices, life-changing impact,” said Dr. Diana Espinoza Barrera, Assistant Professor of Interventional Pulmonary at Tulane School of Medicine.
This achievement highlights Tulane’s continued commitment to innovation in patient care and the impact its faculty are making through leading-edge clinical advancements. Through collaborations with UMC and other clinical partners, Tulane Pulmonary specialists remain at the forefront of delivering transformative treatments to patients across the region.
