What should I bring to my appointment?

During your first appointment we will review your medical history, any information from your referring doctor, and any images (ultrasound, x-ray, CT scans or MRI scans) that have been performed.

Please bring the following:

  • your medical records

  • a list of current medications

If you have any questions about your appointment, please do not hesitate to call us 504-988-5344.

Is surgery necessary?

There are many treatment options for pancreas and biliary system disorders, and not all patients need surgery.  While there are some situations where surgical intervention is the most appropriate and effective treatment option,in many cases the best treatment approach may be through interventional endoscopy, other non-surgical techniques, or medical management. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that we provide you with all treatment options and our opinion about which is right for you.

What is a diagnostic procedure?

In many cases the treating team of physicians will want to know the exact extent of the disease and will want to have a tissue diagnosis (biopsy) before deciding upon the optimal treatment approach.

Diagnostic procedures may include:

  • Endoscopic ultrasound

  • CT guided biopsy

  • Laparoscopic surgery with ultrasound

What is minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery?

Using modern surgical techniques and instruments, including surgical robots, we can perform many surgeries through small incisions instead of the large incisions used during traditional “open” surgery.  Minimally invasive surgical techniques may result in fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.  While these advanced surgical techniques may not be appropriate for every situation, our surgeons are recognized as leaders in the field and are among the select few who are pioneering new surgical techniques for pancreas and biliary surgery.

What is a Second Opinion?

When faced with a serious medical condition many people will request an additional review of their diagnosis or treatment recommendation – this is referred to as a second opinion.  Medical research supports the value of second opinion consultations and physicians are accustomed to their patients seeking additional information.
