Tulane Stroke Outreach Program marks a year of impact and education
The Tulane Stroke Program continues to lead the way in stroke care and community education across Louisiana. Certified by the Joint Commission as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and the first in the state to earn AHA/ASA Target Stroke Elite Plus status, Tulane has demonstrated national excellence in the efficient evaluation and treatment of stroke patients—consistently meeting and surpassing standardized care guidelines.
Under the leadership of Dr. Kendrick Johnson, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Stroke Outreach Program, and Angie Walsh, BSN, RN, Stroke Outreach Nurse Specialist, Tulane’s Stroke Outreach Program has spent the past year expanding its reach and impact, participating in 46 community events.
Dedicated to educating and empowering the community with life-saving knowledge, the program has engaged hundreds of residents through workshops, health fairs, and educational sessions. These events emphasize stroke prevention, recognition, and treatment, helping people across the Greater New Orleans area understand how to act F.A.S.T. when every second counts.
“A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, causing brain cells to die due to lack of oxygen,” explained Dr. Johnson. It’s a medical emergency, and knowing how to recognize the signs can save a life.
Walsh works closely with schools, local organizations, and healthcare partners to bring stroke awareness training directly to the community. From perinatal and postpartum education to senior wellness initiatives, her outreach ensures that life-saving information is accessible to all.
Through Tulane’s continued focus on both clinical excellence and community engagement, the Stroke Program is helping reduce stroke risk, improve outcomes, and build a healthier Louisiana.
