Program Overview
The Health Scholars Program is a partnership between the Office of Academic Excellence and Community Engagement and the Residency Training Programs in the Departments of Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry. The program is co-directed by Drs. Celeste Newby and Tina Simpson. Program leadership also includes Drs. Sonia Malhotra, Erica Tate, Deepa Bhatnagar, Meeta Prakash, and Melynda Simmons Robertson.
Training Outcomes
Through a two-year longitudinal learning experience integrated within their clinical training, Health Scholars:
- Become physicians with outstanding clinical skills who also understand and have a framework for addressing the full range of determinants of health and systemic barriers that lead to differences in health outcomes and healthcare experiences.
- Develop a foundational knowledge of resources available to develop the skills to provide exceptional care to patients from ALL backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and worldviews.
- Develop leadership, communication, scholarship and advocacy skills.
- Become familiar with how attitudes, beliefs, and discrimination affect health and experiences in healthcare settings.
Curriculum Overview
- Up to 10 residents may participate in each cohort of the Scholars Program
- Scholars participate in day-long immersive experiences annually, where they explore the historical context for issues affecting the health and wellbeing of individuals in our region
- Scholars meet monthly for up to two hours throughout the year for didactic and experiential learning opportunities
