Neurology Residency

Our program offers comprehensive clinical neurology training, with opportunities for both clinical and basic science research. We offer a four-year program, with the first year completed in the internal medicine department. We accept 5 categorical neurology residents each year. Residents have the opportunity to train in multiple facilities within New Orleans (University Medical Center, East Jefferson General Hospital, Southeast LA VA Medical Center, Children's' Hospital of New Orleans), giving them the opportunity to interact with many of the local leaders in their fields.  Our program places a strong value on wellness, education, DEI, resident leadership, clinical care across common and rare pathologies, and providing treatment to the underserved.

When residents finish the Tulane Neurology program, they are in a strong position to excel in their choice of fellowship or to practice independently.  Residents graduate with a strong background in vascular neurology, often performing at an expert level, as they rotate through a Comprehensive Stroke Center as well as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center.  Each Monday afternoon is protected time for resident education and grand rounds. Residents are expected to participate in a patient-centered quality improvement project and to present posters or talks at our annual Scholarly Activity Day, put on in concert with the Clinical Neuroscience Research Center.  Residents are also encouraged to take advantage of myriad opportunities to participate in clinical research, present at conferences, and contribute to case reports, review articles, and book chapters.  Tulane is home to the newly opened Healthy Brain Aging Initiative, a three-part clinic specializing in dementia prevention, dementia treatment, and movement disorder treatment.

Our strong Internal Medicine intern year provides an excellent foundation.  The TU IM program is the originator of the 4+1 system, balancing each 4-week core rotation with a week focused on clinic and didactics in both medicine and neurology. This schedule allows for frequent early involvement in neurology clinics, including a unique early start to building your continuity clinic patient panel.
