Two Tulane School of Medicine Scientists Named 2024 AAAS Fellows

Two Tulane University School of Medicine scientists have been elected 2024 Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), one of the most prestigious honors in the scientific community.

Xiao-Ming Yin, MD, PhD, and Wu-Min Deng, PhD, join a distinguished group of scientists, engineers, and innovators whose contributions have advanced science and its applications across disciplines.

Dr. Yin is the Dr. Donald R. and Donna G. Pulitzer Professor and Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Yin’s research is focused on the molecular mechanisms of autophagy in tissue injury, cell death, and the translational aspect of tissue repair and cancer therapy. Yin led the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Tulane during the onset of the COVID-19 crisis. Under his leadership, the department launched a clinical test for COVID-19 with one-day processing.

Dr. Deng is the Gerald & Flora Jo Mansfield Piltz Endowed Professor in Cancer Research and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Deng uses fruit flies as a model organism to study how genes regulate tissue growth, organ development, and cancer progression. Many genes and pathways involved in human disease, particularly cancer, play similar roles in the fly.

Election as an AAAS Fellow is a lifetime honor, recognizing efforts to advance science or its applications in meaningful ways. The AAAS is one of the world’s largest multidisciplinary scientific societies, and its fellowship program is among the field’s oldest and most respected recognitions.
