Welcome! Our Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program offers a three-year pulmonary/critical care training experience in New Orleans, a unique and very enjoyable city. During their training, our fellows manage a diverse patient population while rotating through the following facilities:
- East Jefferson General Hospital
- University Medical Center of New Orleans
- Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System
- Ochsner Clinic Foundation
Applicants for this program must have completed an accredited residency or fellowship program that meets ACGME requirements.

For highly selected fellows who chose an academic track and who are exceptionally productive in their scholarly efforts, our fellowship program offers financial support for a Certificate in Clinical Research course that can be used to obtain subsequently a Master of Science in Clinical Research, this feature was highlighted in the “2015 ATS innovations in fellowship education book".
Individual curriculums are designed based on each fellow’s career goals. These include:
- Adult Cystic Fibrosis
- Adult Sleep Disorders
- Asthma Disease Management
- Interstitial Lung Disease
- Pulmonary Diagnostic Laboratory
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation
In addition to the usual MICU and Pulmonary Consultation services, the clinical experience includes rotations through a level 1 trauma unit, a surgical ICU, a Neuro ICU, lung and solid organ transplant units, a pulmonary rehab program, and several electives based on specific interests or career paths. In addition to their continuity clinic, our fellows rotate through a variety of pulmonary clinics that include Lung Nodule, Pulmonary Hypertension, ILD, Lung Transplant, Cystic Fibrosis and Tuberculosis. A wide variety of procedures are routinely performed, including percutaneous tracheostomies, pleural procedures and advanced bronchoscopy. Bedside ultrasound is routinely used for diagnostic purposes during our MICU rounds and to guide invasive procedures. Several faculty members are trained in endobronchial ultrasound and this is commonly used during bronchoscopies when indicated, and is taught to fellows.
Didactics place special emphasis on chest radiology, on evidence based medicine and critical appraisal of medical literature. A formal critical appraisal method is used in our Journal Club. We have a wide array of conferences, including a dedicated ultrasound curriculum, a sleep medicine lecture series, and several simulation workshops in addition to the core pulmonary and critical care lecture series. First year fellows participate in a Procedural “Boot Camp” at MD Anderson Cancer Center during the beginning of their fellowship. We offer research experience and opportunities in the areas of pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, bronchoscopy & interventional pulmonary, asthma, sleep, aging, pulmonary hypertension, ultrasound, occupational lung diseases and critical care areas such as sepsis, mechanical ventilation and blood transfusion. The program offers a balanced mix of clinical and basic research opportunities. Tulane has a School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and interested fellows can obtain a Masters in Public Health to become more competitive in their academic career.
