Biography
Alva Roché-Green, M.D., has joined the Section of General Internal Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr. Roché-Green earned her medical degree at Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 1998. She completed a residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 2002. She gained advanced training through a palliative medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Jacksonville, Florida in 2011.
She most recently served as the Medical Director of the Palliative Care team at the Parkland Health System in Dallas, TX. She previously served as Division Chief for Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine for the Inova Health System in Falls Church, Virginia. In that role, she led a systemwide initiative to increase understanding and honoring of patients’ wishes throughout their health care journey and to develop an EPIC-based tool for early identification of patients who could benefit from palliative care resources.
Dr. Roché-Green is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine where she currently serves on the yearly conference planning committee.
She has delivered numerous presentations, co-authored the book Supportive Care Strategies Optimizing Transplant Care, contributed to several other books, and published peer-reviewed academic articles related to her areas of expertise. She has led several initiatives to document What Matters Most to all patients and promoting advance care planning in those patients facing serious illness. She also worked with a team to develop an EPIC based trigger tool to allow early identification of patients in need of palliative care resources, this resulted in earlier palliative care consults. As a bonus, loves to teach students and other providers about palliative care and its benefits to patients and families.
Interests:
She specializes in adult and pediatric palliative care with a special interest in symptom management and advanced care planning. Her passion is patient-centered care and understanding what matters most to patients, especially those living with chronic and life–limiting illnesses.
Personal Note:
In her spare time, Dr. Roché-Green loves spending time with her family, going to sporting events, and has recently started gardening. Though she has traveled the country with her family over the past nearly 2 decades, she has embraced the opportunity to return home to Louisiana and practice where her medical journey began in New Orleans. The love of the people and the culture of New Orleans have always been in her heart and now they will be at her door!
