Biography
Gregory Tyler Rives, M.D., grew up in a small paper mill town in South Arkansas. He attended the prestigious Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, a pivotal foundation for his future ambitions. Upon graduation, Tyler pursued his passion for science at Southern Arkansas University. Tyler graduated cum laude from the honors college in 2014, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. Seeking an immersive cultural experience, Tyler spent the summer after graduation on a Danish farm where the sustainability-focused lifestyle left a lasting impression. Tyler attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He was drawn to surgery from early exposure through shadowing the physicians who worked with his uncle, an OR nurse. He was a member of a productive surgical clinical research group and presented at several national conferences. Beyond the awards, he was a tutor and mentor throughout medical school. Tyler graduated at the top of his class with induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society and accolades for outstanding research. He completed a general surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. As a resident, Tyler continued to distinguish himself as a compassionate and dedicated clinician as a resident. He was invested in physician wellness and teaching. He co-founded a resident peer support program aspiring to transform the culture surrounding burnout and mental health. He was awarded the Department of Surgery Resident Teaching Award in 2022. Through his mentorship at MUSC, Tyler found his passion for minimally invasive surgery and obesity medicine, which was the focus of his postgraduate research. He is excited to call New Orleans home now while completing a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Tulane University.
