Michael Hoerger, PhD

Biography
Dr. Hoerger completed an NIH National Research Service Award fellowship in Healthcare Decision Making at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 2013. He received his B.S. in psychology from Michigan State University in 2005 and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Central Michigan University in 2010, while completing an American Psychological Association accredited internship at URMC the same year. Dr. Hoerger came to Tulane in 2013. His research focuses on translational psychological science, aimed at using basic psychological discoveries to improve public health for the nation. Much of his research focuses on how personality and emotion science can be applied to enhance decision-making in high-stakes contexts, such as healthcare. By helping patients with cancer and their families to make healthcare decisions, Dr. Hoerger hopes to reduce the emotional burden of the decision-making process while simultaneously enhancing healthcare outcomes. He welcomes interdisciplinary collaborations. Beyond research, he has participated actively in teaching, mentoring, providing clinical services to underserved members of the community, and engaging with the community on issues related to work, education, and health.
