Biography

Dr. Wayne J.G. Hellstrom is a Professor of Urology and the Chief of Andrology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his MD from McGill University in Montreal, where he also completed a residency in general surgery, followed by a residency in urology at the University of California, San Francisco. He later completed an American Urological Association (AUA) Scholar-funded fellowship in andrology at the University of California, Davis.

 

Dr. Hellstrom has trained 34 fellows, more than 100 residents, and numerous medical students and visiting physicians. He practices as a urologist and andrologist at Tulane Medical Center, Touro Infirmary, East Jefferson General Hospital, University Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in New Orleans. His clinical and research expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction, including Peyronie’s disease, surgical and vascular reconstruction, prosthetic surgery, male infertility (both surgical and medical therapies), benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urethral stricture disease.

 

He is an active member of numerous professional societies and is a Past President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA), the American Society of Andrology (ASA), and the International Society of Sexual Medicine (ISSM). Dr. Hellstrom has authored or co-authored more than 570 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 100 book chapters. He has also edited several major textbooks in the field of andrology, including Male Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction (1997), Handbook of Sexual Dysfunction (1999), Androgen Deficiency and Testosterone Replacement (2013), and Bioenvironmental Issues Affecting Men’s Reproductive and Sexual Health (2017). He has delivered invited presentations locally, nationally, and internationally on a wide range of topics related to male sexual dysfunction and male infertility.

 

His recent honors include the Living Legend Award from the Society of Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons (SUPS, 2022) and the Distinguished Mentor Award (AUA, 2024).
