Biography
Dr. Yosypiv received his M.D. in Pediatrics from the Medical University of Lviv, Ukraine in 1984. He was a research fellow with Dr. Samir El-Dahr at Tulane in 1992-1996 and was then a Research Instructor at Tulane Pediatrics. In 1997-2000 he completed Residency training in Pediatrics and is currently a Fellow in Pediatric Nephrology at Tulane. The primary theme of Dr. Yosypiv's research is elucidation of the role of the kallikrein-kinin and renin-angiotensin systems in kidney developmental growth and hypertension. Ongoing studies are being conducted on the cross-talk of the above systems in renal development.

Research
Our research investigates the mechanisms by which the Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS), cardinal regulator of the blood pressure and fluid/electrolyte homeostasis, controls normal embryonic kidney development and how aberrations in RAS signaling result in congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in children. The goal of our integrated basic science and translational research is to identify the types of molecular processes that can be targeted for clinical intervention. Together with our trans-disciplinary collaborators, we expect that enhanced understanding of how specific RAS gene mutations linked to CAKUT and associated cardiovascular co-morbidities will lead to novel intervention and preventive strategies that improve child health throughout life.
