Jamil Borgi, MD

Dr. Jamil Borgi earned his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in 2004. He then completed three years of General Surgery training at AUBMC, followed by five years of General Surgery residency at the Henry Ford Hospital/ Wayne State University program. After finishing a Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, he was recruited back to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he started a very busy and complex adult Cardiothoracic Surgery practice. During his time at Henry Ford Hospital, he established himself as a leading figure in Cardiothoracic surgery. He helped expand the Cardiothoracic Transplant Program and built a strong referral for complex aortic surgery. Notably, he successfully performed the first combined heart liver transplantation in metro Detroit area in 2014.

In 2018, Dr. Borgi returned to Lebanon, where he performed the first double lung transplantation and the first pulmonary endarterectomy for CTEPH 2018, creating a surgical program for End-Stage Lung diseases at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

Transitioning to Montefiore Medical Center in New York in 2021 as the Associate surgical director for Advanced Pulmonary failure and Lung Transplantation, Dr. Borgi played a pivotal role in reshaping and expanding the Lung transplant program to its current state and started a surgical program for the treatment of Chronic Thromboembolic disease (CTEPH). He also participated heavily in Montefiore’s nationally renowned advanced heart failure program, which offers a whole range of surgical therapies from temporary mechanical circulatory support to permanent Ventricular Devices and Heart transplantation. In 2022, he performed the world's first HIV+ to HIV + heart transplantation.

His practice spans the spectrum of cardiothoracic surgical procedures but focuses on advanced cardiac and pulmonary surgery, including heart and lung transplantations, implantation of Ventricular Assist Devices, mechanical circulatory support, and surgery for chronic thromboembolic disease. Dr. Borgi has a particular interest in aortic and mitral valve repair and complex aortic reconstruction.

Dr. Borgi is very active in clinical research and has presented at multiple national and international meetings. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and several book chapters in the field of Cardiothoracic Surgery. His work focuses mainly on outcomes research, ventricular assist devices, and surgeries for end-stage heart and lung diseases. He is board-certified in both General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
