Biography

Dr. Prieto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology at Tulane University School of Medicine. She received an M.D. degree from the University of Zulia, Venezuela; then she performed a Pediatrics Residency and Clinical Fellowship in Medical Genetics at the same home institution.  Dr. Prieto worked as a clinical geneticist for 10 years before moving to the U.S., where she received a Ph.D in Physiology from Tulane University SoM in 2004. 
 

Research

Dr. Prieto’s research program includes basic and translational sciences. Her research investigates the mechanisms regulating the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system during cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, salt-sensitive hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and obesity. Dr. Prieto pioneered the studies demonstrating the impact of the interaction of prorenin and the prorenin receptor in the development of hypertension and chronic kidney diseases.  

Her research has been funded by the AHA, the NIDDK, NIAID of the NIH. Dr. Prieto also serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and is a faculty mentor for the BIRCWH, LACaTS, and PrePair Underrepresented Minority Program at Tulane University SoM.
