At the Tulane Medicine-Psychiatry Combined Program, education is a top priority. Residents are given protected time to attend didactics specific to each specialty.
While rotating on Internal Medicine, residents will attend afternoon case conferences, grand rounds, ICU report, and the ground-breaking didactic sessions known as "Friday School" for interns and "Monday School" for residents. Visit the Internal Medicine website for specific details.
While rotating on Psychiatry, residents will attend weekly Grand Rounds and twice-weekly didactics. Didactics occur Tuesdays in the form of case-based conferences and Friday afternoons. On Friday afternoons, residents attend year-specific courses which include the following: Emergency Psychiatry, Introduction to the DSM-V, Child Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Psychopharmacology, Geriatric Psychiatry, Substance Abuse, Cultural Psychiatry, Introduction to Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Advanced Psychotherapy. Med/Psych residents hold a weekly Med-Psych Conference on Thursdays. This is a weekly time to catch up with each other and be educated on topics unique to Med/Psych. Those topics include psychosomatic medicine, geriatric psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, medical complications of psychopharmacology, drug and alcohol addiction and withdrawal, special considerations of medical and psychiatric co-morbidity, somatic disorders, eating disorders, and psychiatric aspects of cardiopulmonary, renal, infectious, and hepatic disease. This series includes monthly guest speakers from other departments and institutions and seminar-style discussions of hot topics led by students and residents. As noted below, the conference covers a wide variety of topics.
