We do not currently have training program at Tulane University at this time. There are many training programs available including categorical medical genetics and combined programs, Internal medicine-Medical Genetics and Pediatrics-Medical Genetics.
Majority of programs provide 2-year training tract which will lead to eligibility to take the American board of Medical Genetics and Genomics examination. A 2-year training program includes 18 months of clinical rotation and 6 months of protected research time. To be eligible for categorical Medical Genetics program, applicant must complete 2 years in a primary US ACGME accredited residency such as pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine etc.
For combined programs in Internal Medicine-Medical Genetics and Pediatrics-Medical Genetics, these are a four-year training program and candidates enter this track directly out of medical school.
- Medical Biochemical Genetics fellowship is a 1 year training program. Typical rotation includes inpatient and outpatient genetics, and biochemical laboratory genetics.
- Clinical laboratory specialty tracks offer one year of training in Clinical Biochemical Genetics, 2 years training in Clinical Molecular genetics/cytogenetics.
Additionally, students may want to pursue research opportunities through the DeBakey Scholars Program. This program offers medical students the opportunity to pursue and complete a longitudinal, structured, closely supervised research experience culminating in a capstone presentation prior to graduation. For more information, contact Dr. Derek Pociask.
We offer 2-4 weeks elective rotation in Clinical genetics which include outpatient and inpatient services, and clinical conference, which can be taken anytime during the year.
There are no special considerations when applying to this residency.
Clinical rotation and research background in medical genetics would be helpful to increase your changes of matching.
