Abdo Barakat, MD, MS

Dr. Abdo Barakat is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed fellowships in Critical Care Medicine, Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, and Obstetric Anesthesiology at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center following his anesthesiology residency at the University of Minnesota. His clinical practice spans cardiothoracic anesthesia, cardiothoracic and surgical critical care, and obstetric anesthesia, with a particular interest in the perioperative management of high-acuity and medically complex patients.

Dr. Barakat’s academic and clinical interests include the perioperative management of patients with advanced heart failure, the perioperative and critical care management of heart and lung transplant recipients, the perioperative care of high-risk obstetric patients with cardiovascular disease, and enhanced recovery pathways after cardiothoracic surgery. His scholarly work includes peer-reviewed publications, a book chapter, and presentations at national scientific meetings. He has also served as a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, and Anaesthesia Critical Care & Pain Medicine.

Dr. Barakat remains actively engaged in medical education through resident teaching, simulation, curriculum development, and quality improvement initiatives. He has contributed to projects focused on perioperative transfusion practices, enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery, and ultrasound-guided vascular access.

Dr. Barakat’s multidisciplinary training uniquely positions him to care for critically ill surgical patients at the intersection of anesthesiology, surgery, and critical care. He is particularly interested in integrating perioperative and critical care management to improve continuity of care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease and critical illness across the surgical continuum.
