Biography

Chara Kokkiou is a Medical Ethics Professor of Practice in the Philosophy Department at Tulane University and one of the directors of the interdisciplinary MS in Philosophy and Bioethics. She is also a convener of the funded AI Global Humanities Center Working Group at Tulane. Her publications span a wide range of topics, with a primary focus on emotions, especially compassion, as well as related themes such as suffering and therapy.

She is currently working on a Handbook of Compassion, forthcoming with Routledge, and collaborates with medical ethicists and healthcare professionals on the development of a Compassion Lab. She also plays a leading role in the design and coordination of a survey-based project examining the role of compassion in medical training.

She has a particular interest in how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies intersect with compassion in healthcare, and in how technology can ethically and aesthetically reshape multiple aspects of our world, including human relationships.

Together with Tzofit Ofengenden, she will serve as general editor of a series of edited volumes on suffering, healing, and therapy, forthcoming with De Gruyter and Brill.
