Biography

Years at Tulane:
Since 2001

As a faculty member of Tulane’s Forensic Psychiatry Department, Dr. Vyas's primary focus is treatment of the severely mentally ill in a criminal setting. He performs evaluation of both children and adults in the areas of competency to stand trial, and in providing opinions for insanity at the time of the offense. He supervises medical students, psychiatry residents and forensic psychiatry fellows in broad topics ranging from psychopharmacology, child abuse, custody hearings, and waivers to adult court and various forensic evaluations.

 

His current clinical work is at the ELMHS forensic hospital in Jackson, LA where he provides inpatient psychiatric care as well as competency restoration for individuals accused of crimes in the legal system. In addition, he works at Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans, LA providing psychiatric care to arrested individuals prior to sentencing. Dr. Vyas serves as a faculty interviewer for Tulane Medical School and gives lectures to medical students, psychiatry residents and forensic psychiatry fellows.
