Fernando Sosa
Community Health Worker
Biography
As a Bilingual Community Health Worker for the Brinton Family Health and Healing Center, Fernando works in the community providing support and education to community members to connect them to health and social services and help them navigate the systems to achieve their health goals. Fernando was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador. In 1969, he received a scholarship to come to New Orleans to study and received his degree in Petroleum Engineering Technology. From there he worked for a time in the oil fields of Ecuador, Peru and Brazil and returned to Louisiana to study Chemical Engineering. He retired from Murphy Exploration & Production in 2005. After Katrina while reconstructing his home, he notice the number of Latin Americans working here and thought he could volunteer to assist them with translations. From there a new career started, first with the La. Department of Health & Hospitals, then with Louisiana BEST, Children’s Bureau of New Orleans and now the Brinton Center at the Ruth Fertel/Tulane Community Health Center. Fernando and his late wife Emma had three boys. Fernando is the proud Grandfather of two grandsons, three grand-dogs, and one grand-cat.
