Christopher Weldon, MD

Christopher B. Weldon, MD, PhD (MD’95, PhD,03, R’03, F’04) has returned to Tulane University School of Medicine as The Regents Chair in Surgery, Professor of Surgery, and Director of Faculty Development—a full-circle moment for a distinguished Tulane graduate and nationally recognized academic surgeon.

A proud alumnus of Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Weldon completed his MD and PhD training at Tulane, along with his General Surgery residency and Surgical Critical Care fellowship, before completing his training in Pediatric Surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He remained there for two decades with a focused practice in Pediatric Surgical Oncology and Pediatric Surgical Critical Care, in addition to extensive work in research (population, basic and clinical sciences) and educational activities (Program Director, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship). Furthermore, he served in multiple administrative and leadership roles.

An internationally respected pediatric surgeon and surgical intensivist, Dr. Weldon is known for pioneering multidisciplinary care models, advancing surgical oncology and survivorship research, and mentoring generations of surgeons and physician-scientists.

He has directed nationally accredited fellowship programs, served on NIH and American Board of Surgery committees, and authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications spanning clinical, translational, and population-based research.

As Director of Faculty Development, Dr. Weldon brings a strong commitment to mentorship, professional growth, and academic excellence. His return reflects Tulane’s continued investment in faculty leadership and the future of the Department of Surgery.
