Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program is a two (2) year program which is fully-accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program is designed to fulfill requirements leading to certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Prior to entering the program, candidates must complete at least one (1) year (HO-1) in an ACGME accredited program, transitional program or primary care specialty such as internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, or general surgery.
The Preventive Medicine Residency Program, a unique program cosponsored by Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the School of Medicine, is designed to train residents for careers in academic, administrative and /or clinical preventive medicine/public health.
The program consists of academic work leading to a Master of Public Health degree and supervised practicum experience which fosters application of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of preventive medicine and public health.
The mission of the Tulane General Preventive Medicine Residency Program is to provide residents with an accredited, high-quality educational experience that will train them for careers in academic, administrative, and/or clinical preventive medicine. This mission is accomplished through academic excellence in the didactic education of preventive medicine professionals, creative partnerships to learn and advance the practice of public health, engagement in innovative service to the public health community, and active involvement in scientific research or public health-related projects.
- Provide a curriculum for academic and practicum experiences to prepare graduates to identify, resolve, and prevent population-based health problems and to manage health-related programs;
- Engage residents in clinical preventive services in various community settings;
- Advance preventive medicine and public health knowledge by conducting scientific investigation and/or quality management projects and disseminating the results; and
- Improve the health of communities through collaborative population-based and patient-specific approaches to disease prevention, health promotion and public health response.
Tulane's Preventive Medicine Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The most recent site visit was conducted in 2010, and the next ACGME Self-Study Visit date is schedule for the fall 2023.
