Biography

Dr. Randy Roig is a resident of New Orleans. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the Tulane University School of Engineering and a graduate of the LSU School of Medicine. He completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at LSU, where he was the chief resident and served as President of the National Resident Associations of the PM&R Academy and the Association of American Medical Colleges. He was one of only two residents to receive the two separate American Medical Association resident awards for both leadership and achievement. He is board-certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties in PM&R, pain medicine, and spinal cord injury medicine. After fifteen years in private practice on the Northshore, where he was Chief of Staff of North Oaks Rehabilitation Hospital, he returned to New Orleans and academic practice at the VA. He is now the associate Chief of Staff for Education, Assistant Chief of the PM&R service, and Chief of the pain medicine section.  He is on the faculty of his alma mater, LSU in New Orleans, and Tulane and Emory universities. He serves as Program Director for the Pain Medicine Fellowship at LSU.  In 2015, Dr. Roig was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha as an alumnus of LSU and into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2016. In addition, he was awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.

He is the volunteer, Executive Editor of Rehab in Review, a monthly journal in psychiatry. Dr. Roig has served on numerous nonprofit boards and committees within the medical community, including the Executive Boards of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. He presently serves as physician co-chair of the Medical Legal Interprofessional Committee of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Louisiana State Bar Association. He is a volunteer member of the Tulane Institutional Review Board for Biomedical Research. He also serves as the Louisiana point-of-contact for the American Academy of PM&R.  He maintains active membership in the AMA, the American Academy of PM&R, the Association of Academic Psychiatrists, and the Louisiana State Medical Society.

He is currently a board member of ReNEW Charter Schools and serves as chair of the academic excellence committee.  He is an active member of Forum for Equality and also the Friends of the Cabildo, where he serves as a volunteer and licensed tour guide. Furthermore, he is a member of several community-oriented groups, such as Patio Planters, Vieux Carré Property Owners and Residents Association, Baronne Street Neighborhood Association, Save Our Cemeteries, and numerous other civic organizations.

Awards & Recognitions

On June 21, Dr. Roig will become the next Chief of Staff at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, the New Orleans VA Hospital. Dr. Roig is a graduate of the Tulane University School of Engineering and the LSU School of Medicine. He completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he served as chief resident. He served as president of the Resident Physician Council of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and as the chair of the Organization of Resident Representatives of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is American Board of Medical Specialties board-certified in PM&R, pain medicine, and spinal cord injury medicine.

Dr. Roig returned academic practice at VA after 15 years of private practice. He is now the Associate Chief of Staff for education, assistant chief of the PM&R service, and chief of the pain medicine section. He is on the faculty at Tulane Program in Medical Ethics and Human Values, and at LSU and Emory. He is program director for the pain medicine fellowship at LSU in addition to being the course director for the second-year musculoskeletal medicine and dermatology systems block. Dr. Roig has been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society, also having been awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. He was named the 2017 mentor of the year at LSU and has received numerous teaching and professionalism awards. Dr. Roig will bring his impressive background as a leader and mentor to his new position as the leader of a clinical team. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Roig as the VA’s new Chief of Staff.
