Biography

What is your hometown?
Born and raised in Pereira, Colombia. Moved from Chicago where my family still resides.

What part of town do you live in?
I live in Uptown/Carrolton area close to the Tulane Undergraduate Campus, the architecture is very beautiful here in New Orleans. Audubon park is a few blocks away and it is a nice area to take a walk, run, ride your bike, or spend time with your fellow co-residents.

What did you do the summer before internship?
I spent it with my family and girlfriend, trying to spend as much quality time as possible with loved ones, and visited family members in Colombia.

How hard has it been adapting to the frequent switch from IM/Peds? Any advice?
I started in the Medicine side of affairs, and I still have no made my first switch to Pediatrics. However, I had to this switch for some clinic patients in the ambulatory Med/Peds clinics and it was a challenging experience, but it was still able to remind me of my love for Pediatrics, and Children in general! My resident in clinic was very supportive and guided me through my first pediatrics patient with a throughout physical examination, and evaluation. My advice would be for you to be willing to be flexible.

How long did it take to feel connected to the IM/Peds residents after your first switch?
I feel supported by my residents, they are usually checking up on me, to see if I have any questions, doubts, or concerns. Something I really appreciate is their willingness to give you an advice, and word of encouragement when you are going through a difficult rotation.

What advice would you give someone about moving to New Orleans?
I would advise you to be ready to enjoy the sunlight and warmth of the South but be prepared for the rain as well. It is a beautiful city to appreciate sunsets and be physically active. The patient population here is very underserved with very specific needs and many times experiencing very difficult social circumstances. In a positive note, your patients will appreciate your hard work when they notice you are trying your best to not only serve their health issues, but also their social circumstances.
