illustration of adrenal glands & kidneysThe adrenal glands are small glands that sit on top of the kidneys in the retroperitoneum (the deepest part of the abdomen).  They are several centimeters in length and each weighs 4-6 grams.  The medulla is located in the center of the gland and makes adrenaline and noradrenaline (these hormones are also known as epinephrine and norepinephrine).

Diseases of the adrenal glands usually are caused by either too much or too little of these hormones.  Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the adrenal gland is not producing enough hormones; this is also referred to as Addison's disease.  The adrenal gland may make too much of any one of these hormones and cause any of the following diseases: Cushing's syndrome (too much cortisol), primary hyperaldosteronism (too much aldosterone), virilizing syndrome (too much androgen), pheochromocytoma (too much adrenaline), or paraganglioma (too much adrenaline).

Surgery may be required to address adrenal disorders.  Dr. Kandil specializes in endocrine system surgery, including surgery for adrenal related diseases.

Patient Testimonial

Patient Came From Florida For Adrenal Surgery, After 19 Prior Abdominal Surgeries

"I am so thankful that I came to Tulane University with Dr. Kandil heading my procedure. I’ve had a wonderful outcome and the pain has been much milder with his techniques. I would strongly recommend him. I will come again to get my whole abdominal wall done. I’m requesting this considering I have multiple hernias at this time. Had I not used Dr. Kandil and his techniques I know personally from 19 other surgeries, I would still be staying in the hospital, have much more pain, and not even eating at this point. I was able to walk around, drink, and eat in less than 24 hours. Thank you Dr. Kandil for your techniques and for being my doctor. I will drive from anywhere to come to you. Panama City Beach Florida is far but not for what you’ve done for me."  Sincerely,  Tonya Sue Z., Panama City, Florida
