Biography
Dr. L. Lee Tynes is board-certified in psychiatry and internal medicine, holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Tynes came to Tulane Psychiatry in 1989 as a behavior therapist following his Clinical and Research Fellowship in Psychology at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. While simultaneously attending the LSU School of Medicine, he worked with Drs. Dan Winstead, Pat O'Neill, and others to create the Tulane Combined Internal Medicine & Psychiatry residency program, becoming its first graduate five years later, and eventually its Program Director. For the past nine years, he has served as the Medical Director of Psychiatry at Our Lady of the Lake (OLOL) Hospital in Baton Rouge, where he helped create their Psychiatry Residency Program and the Clinical Psychology Internship. He also built the inpatient academic Consultation-Liaison Service, and oversaw the creation of the 22-bed Emergency Department Psychiatric Unit. In 2016, he established the evidence-based, primary care-focused Collaborative Care Management program, and still serves as the Psychiatric Caseload Consultant to seven primary care practices. Prior to his tenure at OLOL, he had served as the Medical Director of Central Louisiana State Hospital, Medical Director for the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority, and the Acting Director of the Mental Health Service Line at the New Orleans VA Medical Center. Dr. Tynes has over 50 published works to his credit, including journal articles, abstracts, book chapters, and published educational curricula. He represents the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association in the national Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and also represents the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and the APA in the American Medical Association House of Delegates. He is known regionally and nationally as an expert in the Collaborative Care model of primary care mental health service delivery. Dr. Tynes is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, the American College of Psychiatrists, and the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and has recently been named a Distinguished Life Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association.
