Biography

Dr. Douglas Alexander was born in New Orleans and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. After spending six years in Phoenix following high school, he returned to New Orleans in 2006—a city that has remained home ever since. Prior to entering medicine, Dr. Alexander worked for over a decade as a commercial espresso machine technician. Certain life experiences during that time inspired him to pursue a career in addiction psychiatry.

At age 30, he walked into a college classroom for the first time at Loyola University New Orleans. He went on to complete medical school, psychiatry residency, and a fellowship in addiction psychiatry at LSU Health New Orleans. Throughout most of his psychiatry training, he worked at a local detox facility, further deepening his commitment to serving individuals affected by substance use disorders.

Before joining Tulane, Dr. Alexander spent two years as an attending psychiatrist at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. He now provides care at the UMC Behavioral Health Clinic and NOLA Detox. Helping those impacted by addiction has been his central professional focus since his first day of college.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Alexander’s greatest joy is his family. He and his loved ones are thrilled to be back in New Orleans, where they enjoy trying new restaurants, spending time with friends and neighbors, going on camping trips, and RV travel. His favorite hobby is working on old European cars—especially vintage Saabs.
