Biography

Dr. Janz completed his medical school training at the LSU School of Medicine New Orleans.  He then completed an Internal Medicine residency, Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine fellowship, and Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.  Dr. Janz returned to New Orleans in 2014 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the LSU School of Medicine in the Section of Pulmonary/Critical Care and was the Director of the Clinical Research Unit for the Section.  In 2020, he was hired by University Medical Center New Orleans as the Director of Medical Critical Care Services.  In 2023, Dr. Janz became the Director of Critical Care Services for UMCNO along with an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Tulane School of Medicine.

Dr. Janz’s clinical and research interests include the acute respiratory distress syndrome, shock, and tracheal intubation of critically ill adults.  Dr. Janz has over 80 publications on these and other critical care topics.  Dr. Janz is a founding member and member of the steering committee for the Pragmatic Critical Care Research Group, which conducts comparative effectiveness, randomized trials of commonly used ICU interventions.  Additionally, he is active in the American College of Chest Physicians on the editorial board of the journal CHEST and is the Invited Content Section Editor, past chair of the Critical Care Board review course, active member of the ACCP SEEK board review question writing group, and faculty in a number of in-person learning events for critical care advanced practice providers.  

Dr. Janz has interest in and performs a number of administrative roles in Critical Care, including overseeing the function of all ICUs at UMCNO.  As the Director of Critical Care Services for UMCNO, he monitors all UMNCO ICUs, mentors other ICU attending physicians and leaders, provides data on key performance indicators to bedside staff, regularly meets with all disciplines in each ICU, develops goals and associated action plans to achieve these goals, and sets the future course for critical care at UMCNO.  His role as Director of Critical Care oversees the busiest ICUs in the LCMC System of hospitals, with an average number of annual admissions to UMCNO ICUs of over 5,000 patients
