Biography
Dr. Enrique Diaz-Guzman Zavala joined the Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine as an Associate Professor and Director of the Tulane Lung Center. Dr. Diaz completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received special training in the management of patients with Pulmonary Hypertension, Interstitial Lung Diseases and Lung Transplantation. He subsequently joined the University of Kentucky as an Associate Program Director of the Pulmonary & Critical Care Fellowship program and served as the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant, Heart & Lung Transplant and ECMO programs at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Diaz later joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as an Associate Professor and served as the Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program and led the development of the Advanced Lung Disease and ECMO programs at UAB. Subsequently, Dr. Diaz partnered with Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, to launch the first Medical ECMO program in the Panhandle region of Florida, serving hundreds of patients with catastrophic lung injury who otherwise could not have access to advanced cardiopulmonary services. Dr. Diaz-Guzman also served as an Adjunct Associate Professor for UAB and partnered with the University of Florida to provide care and coordinate the transplant care of patients living in remote areas and away from their Transplant Centers.
Dr. Diaz-Guzman areas of expertise include Lung Transplantation and Extracorporeal Life Support. His areas of active research and academic interest include the use of Extracorporeal Life Support as a Bridge to Recovery or Lung Transplantation, prolonged use of artificial lung technologies in high-risk transplant candidates, and utilization of advanced therapies and lung transplantation for disadvantaged populations or those with limited socioeconomic resources. He joined Tulane University to lead the team to provide lung transplantation and ECMO services for patients with advanced lung diseases.
